THE TRUTH BEHIND THESE 6 HAIR MYTHS

THE TRUTH BEHIND THESE 6 HAIR MYTHS

We hear concerns from our clients everyday about their daily hair care routine based on the MANY hair myths they hear…and believe. We understand this can be very confusing and can really be doing more harm than good. We wanted to address the top 5 myths we hear from our clients and expose the truth behind them.

MYTH: AIR DRYING IS HEALTHIER THAN BLOW-DRYING

TRUTH: Both can be damaging to our hair, but air-drying can in-fact create damage deeper within the hair strands. When hair strands are exposed to water for extended periods of time the stands swell, creating more damage than heat styling. Yes, blow-drying can be damaging too if too much direct high-heat is applied.

OUR BEAUTYKIT STUDIO RECOMMENDATION: It’s best to use a heat protectant, (we suggest Amika’s Blockade) and keep your dryer at a lower heat setting. Make sure to continuously move your dryer and keep it at least six inches away.

MYTH: RINSING WITH COLD WATER WILL MAKE YOUR HAIR SHINER

TRUTH: Stylists often finish washing hair with ice-cold water because it’s supposed to close your hair cuticle. When the cuticle is flattened, the cuticle will reflect light, making the hair look shiner. However, your hair contains no living cells, which means, it doesn’t react to cold (or hot) water. If smoother, shinier strands are what you’re after, invest in a good conditioner instead.

OUR BEAUTYKIT STUDIO RECOMMENDATION: One of our faves is Amika’s Normcore Signature Conditioner. This everyday conditioner boosts hydration, softness, shine and is a loaded with vitamins and antioxidants!

MYTH: SUDSY SHAMPOO CLEANS YOUR HAIR BETTER

TRUTH: Shampoos don’t necessarily need to lather to get your hair clean. Most of us have just been used to thinking suds means clean. In reality- sulfates, the foaming agent added to many shampoos, can fade your color if you dye your hair. Although American Cancer Association gives sulfates a safe-stamp of approval, some studies suggest sulfates pose cancer risks.

OUR BEAUTYKIT STUDIO RECOMMENDATION: If you want to play it safe, and still like your suds-all Amika Products are sudsy and sulfate-free!

MYTH: DANDRUFF SIGNIFIES A DRY SCALP

TRUTH: Dandruff is the overgrowth of cells can cause buildup of yeast on the scalp causing flakes. We’ve all heard dandruff is associated with a dry scalp, but it’s actually an oily scalp that usually goes hand in hand with dandruff. Many people believe the solution is to add more oil, but since dandruff is oily already, applying more oil will simply give you stickier and greasier flakes.

OUR BEAUTYKIT STUDIO RECOMMENDATION: Have a stylist access your situation and help provide you with a treatment plan. We like Amika’s Reset, it’s an oil-to-foam hybrid that uses pink clay and charcoal gently to draw out impurities and remove product build-up without stripping hair.

MYTH: WEARING YOUR HAIR UP TOO MUCH CAN MAKE YOUR HAIR FALL OUT

TRUTH: A loose ponytail or bun is fine. But, yes, a constant stream of tightly woven braids, ponytails and top knots can be damaging because it creates tension on your hair follicles and can lead to permanent loss. You can wear your hair up, we just maybe go easy on the rubber bands.
